Sanitary Provisions
Individual washroom and water closet compartment doors
· Individual washroom and water closet compartment doors shall:
(a) Provide a clear opening of at least 850mm with the door in fully open position and the face of the doorstop with the door.
(b) Be designed to swing outwards or be provided with sliding/folding door
(c) Be provided with a horizontal pull bar:-
(i) at least 600mm long on the inside of an out-swing door;
(ii) the end closer of the hinge is not more than 130mm from the hinged side of the door and
(iii) fixed at a height between 900mm to 1100mm.
(d) Be provide with a vertical pull-bar
(i) at least 140mm long on the outside near the latch side of the door
(ii) pull-bar shall not be more than 130mm from the latched side of the door and
(iii) placed at height between 90mm to 110mm;
(e) Be capable of being locked from inside by a device that is operable with one hand and activated by a force not more than 22N and which does not require:
(i) Fine finger control;
(ii) Tight grasping; and
(iii) Pinching or twisting of the wrist
Grab Bars
· Both individual washrooms or water closet compartments shall be provided with grab bars and shall comply with the following requirements:
(a) Be in accordance with the requirements for grab bars
(b) Be mounted at a height between 280mm and 300mm from the top of the water closet seat;
(c) One horizontal grab bar to be mounted on the side wall closet to the water closet extending from the rear wall to at least 450mm in front of the water closet seat
(d) One flip-up grab bar which has to be able to remain at a vertical position when not in use and be mounted on the wide side of the compartment adjacent to the water closet.
(e) One vertical bar to be provided on the side wall closet to the water closet and located between 350mm and 450mm from the front edge and
(f) One horizontal grab bar of at least 700mm long, to be mounted on the wall behind the water closet.
Emergency Call
· An emergency call bell shall be provided in:-
(a) An individual washroom compartment
(b) A water closet compartment.
· The emergency call bell shall be equipped with a waterproof push button or pull-chord for activating the bell;
· The push button or pull chord shall:
(a) Be located at height between 400mm to 600mm above the floor level and located between 150,mm to 300mm from either the front or side edges of the water closet
(b) Have a color that is contrasting with the background
· The call annunciation shall, where appropriate, be provided by
(i) A call bell located outside the compartment
(ii) A buzzer in the caretaker’s office.
· A notice stating “emergency call” shall be prominently affixed next to the push-button or pull-chord.
· Wash basins shall:
(a) Be of a standard size with dimensions of approximately 520mm by 410mm
(b) Be mounted such that the minimum distance between the centre line of the fixture and the side wall is 460mm
(c) Be mounted such that the top edge is between 800mm and 840mm from the floor
(d) Have a knee space of at least 750mm wide by 200mm deep by 680mm high with an additional toe space of at least 750mm wide by 230mm deep by 230mm high

(a) Have a minimum clear floor space of 750mm wide by 1200mm deep of which a maximum of 480mm in depth may be under the wash basin.

Water Closet
· Water closet shall comply with the following requirement:
(a) Be located between 460mm to 480mm from the centre line of the water closet to the adjacent wall and have a clear dimension of 750mm from the front edge of the water closet to the rear wall to facilitate side transfer
(b) The top of the water closet seat shall be between 450mm and 480mm from the floor;
(c) Have no spring-activated seat;
(d) Have a back support where there is no seat lid or tank. A back support reduced the chance of imbalance or injury caused by leaning against exposed valves or pipes
(e) Have flush control:-
(i) If hand-operated, be located on the the transfer side of the water closet and
(ii) Located at a height of between 800mm to 1100mm from the floor
Individual Washroom
· Where an individual washroom for is provided:-
(a) Have clear dimensions between opposite walls of not less than 1750mm
(b) Have a clear space of not less than 900mm by 1500mm adjacent to the water closet
(c) Be equipped with a door complying with the requirement for doors of washroom
(d) Have grab bars comply with the above requirements
(e) Have wash basin comply with the above requirements
(f) Have a toilet roll dispenser mounted below the grab bars and not more than 300mm from the front edge of the seat and at a height between 50mm to 250mm from the top of the water closet seat
(g) Be equipped with a coat hook mounted on a side wall not more than 1300mm from the floor and projecting not more than 40mm form the wall
(h) Be equipped with an emergency call bell in accordance with the above requirements.

Washroom Accessories
· Where washroom accessories are required, they shall comprise the following:
(a) A mirror positioned at a height of not more than 1000mm from the bottom edge of the mirror to the floor;

(b) Towel and soap dispensers, hand dryer, waste bin and sanitary bin shall contrast in color and tone and positioned such that the operable parts and controls are between 1000mm and 1200mm from the floor.
