Lift

 

Control button

Braille and tactile markings shall be provided on the lift control buttons which are not touch-sensitive and activated at a minimum force of 3.5N or 350g. Alternatively, Braille and tactile markings may be provided to the left of lift control buttons if the buttons are touch-sensitive and is shown in Fig.

 

The Braille markings:-

  • Shall be placed below or left of the tactile markings as illustrated below;
  • Shall be placed at a minimum spacing of 4mm from tactile markings;
  • It is not recommended to use a paste-on Braille on the control panel to avoid injury to the users of the lift when operating the lift buttonx

Tactile markings shall:–

  • Be in Arabic numerals or symbols
  • Have a dimension of between 15mm to 20mm high
  • Be raised a minimum of 1mm
  • Have a high contrasting colour background

Grab bars shall-

  • Be slip-resistant;
  • Have a diameter of between 35mm to 45mm or a shape that provides an equivalent gripping surface;
  • Have a spacing of 40mm to 50mm between the wall and grab bar where mounted adjacent to the wall;
  • Have a contrasting colour background;
  • Be fixed at both sides and at the rear of the lift car at a height of between 800mm and 900mm above the floor level; and
  • Be allowed to have a gap not greater than 150mm where the grab bars at the side and rear walls meet. 

                                                     

Safety System

 

A photo-eye or infra-red detection or sensing device shall be provided to control the closing of the lift doors in order to ensure that the doors do not contact with passengers physically. An audible signal is also necessary to alert the passengers when the doors are closing.

 

 

Lift designated for wheelchair users

 

At least one lift shall be made accessible for wheelchair users from the entrance level. It shall enable the wheelchair users to access all levels intended. The minimum size of the lift car shall be 1200 mm wide by 1400 mm deep with a clear door opening of not less than 900mm.

 

                                                              

Lift landing call button located outside of the lift shall have-

  • A minimum clear floor space of 900mm by 1200mm with no obstructions placed to block the wheelchair users;
  • At a height of between 900m and 1200mm from the floor level.

The lift car control buttons located inside the lift –

  • Shall be placed vertically or horizontally or both vertically and horizontally;
  • Shall be at a height of between 900mm and 1200mm from floor level.
